All I Desire
Douglas Sirk’s drama tells of a successful actress called home by her estranged daughter.
Dir Douglas Sirk
With Barbara Stanwyck, Richard Carlson, Lyle Bettger, Maureen O’Sullivan
In the early 1900s, an actor (Stanwyck) is beseeched by her estranged daughter (herself dreaming of stardom) to revisit their small-town home and the husband and family she abandoned years earlier – and that’s when gossip, conflict and forgotten passions flare up. Stanwyck brilliantly suggests the protagonist’s mixed emotions, while Sirk’s clear-eyed analysis of the shortcomings of bourgeois mores and the complex undercurrents of family life is razor-sharp.
