One of Almodóvar’s richest movies, this follows a woman’s attempts to overcome deep grief by visiting her ex-lover in Barcelona and by making new friends. Though still laced with camp humour, the film saw the director attain a new maturity not only in dealing with the troubled realities of everyday life but in the deft navigation of the story’s many emotional twists and turns.
