Herzog’s extraordinary film about Spanish conquistadors on a doomed quest for El Dorado is not only a stirring study of the clash between arrogant ‘civilisation’ and the natural obstacles of the Amazonian jungle and its inhabitants, but a vivid document of the challenges inevitable in its own making. Kinski is superb as the increasingly deluded megalomaniac Aguirre, while the images are often breathtakingly primal and mysterious.
