Reflecting on his own artistic problems, Fellini responded by making this acclaimed study of a famous film director (Mastroianni) suffering creative block while trying to make a sci-fi epic; his complicated love life only adds to his uncertainty. Gianni Di Venanzo’s black-and-white cinematography effortlessly evokes the protagonist’s chaotic anxieties, while Nino Rota’s music lends coherence to an imaginatively sprawling narrative.
