Tess (Griffith) is a working-class aspiring stockbroker working as a secretary - for the moment. Assigned to work for a high-powered executive (and shoulder pad goddess) Katharine (Weaver), she thinks this might be the supportive environment for her to flourish professionally - but Katherine turns out to be a bully, a situation exacerbated by the fact that her lover Jack (Ford) takes a professional and personal interest in Tess. A romantic comedy and an office drama simultaneously, Working Girl is a perfectly balanced showcase of the ruthlessness of the corporate world, showing some of the perverse mechanisms of keeping women from fulfilling their full potential.
