Renoirs’s masterpiece presents a critique of the declining French upper-middle classes using the frameworks of French comedy theatre. On the brink of the Second World War, the guests at a weekend shooting party are oblivious to the horrors soon to unfold. Banned by the French government for being demoralising, Renoir’s critique is subtle but biting, while retaining his humanism encapsulated in the iconic line, ‘Everyone has their reasons.’
