In 18th-century France, a female artist is commissioned to paint the portrait of Lady Héloïse so it can be sent to her suitor. However, the subject does not want to be painted, or married. Céline Sciamma’s exquisite and deftly observed romance, beautifully played out by Merlant and Haenel, burns with passion and is bewitchingly crafted; each frame resembles an immaculate painting in this hypnotic story of forbidden love.
