Coppola’s sequel to his original film of Mario Puzo’s Mafia bestseller extends the timeframe both backwards (to Vito Corleone’s arrival in New York in the early 20th century) and forwards (to his son Michael’s ruthless consolidation of his own power in the postwar years). The narrative’s epic sweep, the ubiquitously polished craftsmanship and the fine performances make for consistently engrossing viewing.
