Two married lovers plot to murder their respective spouses. Inspired by a real fait divers – a brief, sensational crime story in a newspaper – Chabrol’s film sees regular collaborator Audran play opposite a fabulously oily Piccoli. Briefly banned in France for its proximity to a then-ongoing legal case, it is a caustic portrait of provincial suffocation and the twisted logic of desire.
Contains scenes of graphic violence or injury.
