In 1930s Paris, 18-year-old Violette leads a secret double life – until the night she commits an unspeakable act. Isabelle Huppert, in the first of seven collaborations with Chabrol, brings her trademark opacity to one of the filmmaker’s most fascinating anti-heroines. Less interested in motive than in the social conditions that produce such acts, this is a film that steadfastly refuses to judge its criminal.

Contains scenes of graphic violence or injury, domestic violence or abuse, rape and drug use.

The screening of Violette Nozière on Sunday 20 September will be introduced by academic Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze.
