An Ealing anthology film that combines comedy and drama in an unusual but effective way, examining the lives of a train’s passengers prior to a rail disaster. Crichton directs a segment about a philandering classical conductor torn between his wife and a glamorous pianist. Cole’s focuses on an engine driver hoping for a promotion but whose actions risk his career. And Dearden completes the film with two dramas: one about an actor who has murdered his wife, and another concerning a former prisoner of war and his wife, who desperately want to start their lives afresh.
