Vitti and Gassman face off as Tosca and Scarpia in this retelling of 19th-century French playwright Victorien Sardou’s drama. Vitti skilfully combines tragedy and rebelliousness in Luigi Magni’s little-known gem, which sees the arias from Puccini’s popular opera replaced by Roman songs composed specifically for the film.
