A failing spiritualist engineers a kidnapping to gain media attention in this powerful psychological thriller. The central performances are outstanding, Attenborough winning a BAFTA for his study of the psychic’s dangerously devoted husband. The old dark house where their intense, obsessive relationship plays out is brilliantly designed, and shot in shadowy black and white, with John Barry’s atmospheric score completing the unsettling effect.
