Against the backdrop of a bleak industrial landscape, a traumatised woman embarks on an affair. Antonioni’s first colour film critiques industrialisation and reflects on fragmented human connection in a rapidly changing society. Vitti, starring alongside Harris, gives a devastating performance as the fragile Giuliana, who is searching for something she cannot name. The film won the Golden Lion at the 1965 Venice Film Festival.
