Radical Cinema: Past, Present and Future Histories
+ Onyeka Igwe in conversation with William Fowler
Join us for experimental films and an extended conversation about Peter Watkins’ signature approach to cinema: restaging past events in the present and framing speculative futures as documentary.
A Radical Duet
UK 2023. Director Onyeka Igwe. 28min. Digital
The Role of a Lifetime
UK 2003. Director Deimantas Narkevičius. 17min. Digital
The Pickers
UK 2009. Director Adam Chodzko. 18min. Digital
- Total running time 103min
These three films draw on the spirit of Watkins’ work and the issues that concerned him. Onyeka Igwe asks, what happened in 1940s London when two women of different generations, but both fighting colonialism, came together to put their imagination into writing a revolutionary play? Deimantas Narkevičius sees Peter Watkins argue that political neutrality is impossible when making films. And Adam Chodzko’s The Pickers follows a group of Romanian migrant workers at a Kent farm where they pick strawberries and edit archival film.
