During the Industrial Revolution, three friends decide to open a textile factory to make their fortune. But friendships, personal relationships and moral values are soon tested. An adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Stanisław Reymont’s novel, Wajda’s film is a compelling and continually pertinent indictment of rampant capitalism and humanity’s more selfish impulses. Wajda’s first Academy Award-nominated drama remains one of his most celebrated films.
