The less radical of the Cahiers du Cinéma critics turned filmmakers, Éric Rohmer’s classic centres on a devoutly Catholic engineer newly arrived in Clermont-Ferrand. He has decided to marry a woman he spotted at Mass, but encounters a test of faith when he meets Maud, a confident, attractive and intelligent divorcée. The fourth of his Six Moral Tales, My Night with Maud deftly blends the physical with the metaphysical.
