A young man, living with his parents, works in their dry-cleaning shop in South Central LA. He has no prospects but, unlike his successful brother and rich fiancée, he cares deeply about his community and working-class values. When his best friend is released from prison, trouble lies in store. Rich in detail and with a strong sense of place, this humorous and poignant tragi-comedy, the second feature by the director of Killer of Sheep, is a revelation.
Restored in 4K in 2025 by Milestone Films in collaboration with UCLA Film & Television Archive and Berkley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Restoration supervised by Charles Burnett in collaboration with Jillian Borders and Maya S. Cade.
Temporary VAT-reduced rate for children: prices have been adjusted for all under 16’s tickets booked between 25 June and 1 September for screenings during the same period.
