David Lynch’s film is part-psychological thriller, part-neo-noir homage to LA. An aspiring actress, newly arrived in the city, befriends an amnesiac who survived a car accident and has a significant amount of money on her. But things aren’t quite what they seem. This is essential Lynch, a film as beautiful as it is baffling. A recent entry into the top ten of Sight and Sound’s greatest films poll, it’s an extraordinary achievement.
