The third film in the director’s Solidarity Trilogy, Wajda’s portrait of Lech Wałęsa, leader of Poland’s Solidarity movement, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and one of the country’s most significant political figures, is a rousing biopic. It skilfully explores the different facets of Wałęsa, both as a complex national hero and an ordinary family man, while at the same considering what it means to create a national legend and what it takes to persevere in the face of suppression.
