In this brilliant examination of Japanese post-war society, Noriko is a single working woman content to live with her widowed father. That is, until a visiting aunt declares that Noriko ought to marry before it’s too late, threatening to erode their harmonious co-existence. One of the film’s most memorable sequences sees Noriko taking a beachside bicycle trip with a potential suitor, only for things to turn out differently.
