Alain Resnais was a central figure in the Left Bank group, the more experimental and literary-fused off-shoot of the French New Wave. In his enigmatic film puzzle, a man meets a woman at a gathering at a strange grand chateau and attempts to convince her that they have met before and even shared a romance. Striking visuals, gliding camera movements and fractures in time create one of the most unforgettable and intoxicatingly surreal dreamscapes in cinema.
