In the titular hotel, a modest building sitting on the bank of Paris’ Canal Saint-Martin, two couples’ lives intertwine following a botched suicide pact. Among the leading examples of French poetic realism, this melancholic yet riveting portrait of pre-war working-class life showcases memorable performances by some of the 1930s French cinema’s most celebrated stars, a jazz-inspired score and moodily atmospheric visuals.
Contains themes of suicide.
