As his original screenplay for The Truman Show was being filmed by Peter Weir, Andrew Niccol embarked on his equally prescient directorial debut, which explores the world of genetic engineering. Vincent was born naturally and has a heart defect. Against the rules of a society obsessed with physical perfection, he adopts a fake ID and enrols at an aerospace corporation, with ambitions of becoming an astronaut. However, a murder at the institution threatens to unmask him. With the aid of Irene, a fellow student he has fallen in love with, Vincent attempts to evade the authorities and meet his date with destiny. A razor-sharp script that offers a chilling glimpse of a future scientific autocracy, superb performances and breathtakingly beautiful visuals made Gattaca one of the most intelligent and affecting sci-fi dramas of the 1990s.

‘Because it is a masterpiece.’
