Adapted by Leonard Gardner from his novel, Huston’s film evocatively captures the fragile hopes and dreams of individuals battling each other in the amateur boxing world. Former pro Tully faces off against past demons while Ernie, his young protégé, grapples with his own personal challenges. As tensions escalate, the two men’s ambitions threaten to tear their relationship apart. Keach and Bridges are outstanding as the old timer and up-and-comer in this raw-yet-sensitive late-career gem from one of classical Hollywood’s great filmmakers.
