Ian Christie has chosen A Diary for Timothy as his selection for this alternative Top Ten of greatest films, and we are screening it with Humphrey Jennings’ other wartime masterpiece, Fires Were Started. Jennings combined a realistic portrait of the lives of ordinary people in wartime with a surrealist’s ability to find poetry in the commonplace. These two films provide unique and poetic accounts of the landscape of wartime Britain.
Unfortunately the screening on Tuesday 5 February will no longer be introduced by Ian Christie as previously advertised, but we’re pleased that he will introduce the first screening on Monday 4 February instead. The short film, Rainbow Dance, will be shown at both screenings.
BFI Southbank will be closed Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 June due to a private event. There is currently no step-free access to the Mezzanine or Blue Room. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
