The 1967 Detroit riot was a large-scale civil unrest triggered by racism, economic inequality and police brutality. They were initiated by police raiding a late-night bar with deadly force. Seen from the perspective of characters on both sides, Bigelow and writer Mark Boal (who previously worked with Bigelow on her previous two films) consulted with survivors to capture the emotional truth of what took place. Detroit is a riveting, all-too-timely portrait of a society on the cusp of collapse.

Contains scenes of racist violence.
