Inspired by a true story, Mungiu’s compelling film chronicles the events that occur when Voichita, a young nun, receives a visit from Alina, who was her closest friend in the orphanage they grew up in and who now wants her to give up the monastery. Voichita, however, is happy to obey the Orthodox priest who oversees the place, which means prioritising her duty to God and the Church over human love. Thus begins what turns out to be a terrible and tragic battle of wills, observed by Mungiu with considerable compassion.
