Pialat’s final portrait of youth made a star – and César recipient – of Bonnaire, who plays Suzanne, a 16-year-old navigating her feelings and burgeoning sexuality. Caught between the advances of the boys and men around her, and the oppressiveness of family life, Suzanne seeks happiness on her own terms. The film’s loose structure allows Pialat to capture the cadences of Suzanne’s rapidly changing worldview and desire to tread her own path in life.
A Nos Amours is a collective founded by Joanna Hogg and Adam Roberts dedicated to programming, promoting, understanding and enjoying over-looked, under-exposed or especially potent cinema.
