A MUBI Release
The final instalment in his ‘Oslo Trilogy’ – following Reprise (LFF 2006) and Oslo, August 31st (LFF 2011) – Trier chronicles four bumpy years in the life and loves of the irrepressible Julie. Vibrant and playful, Julie is an academic over-achiever with charm and good looks to burn. Her attitude to work, love and commitment is capricious to say the least. But, perhaps never needing to try too hard has left her unsure of what it is she really wants? Trier and regular co-writer Eskil Vogt craft a witty, inventive and tender tale whose tonal shifts through euphoria, heartbreak and hope are beautifully interpreted by the wonderful Reinsve as Julie. Anders Danielsen Lie (the star of previous films in Trier’s trilogy) delivers a characteristically complex performance as Aksel, who bears the brunt of Julie’s unrest and indecision.
