Bob Hoskins achieved a career high with his portrait of Alan Darcy, a kindly everyman who reopens a local boxing club in Nottingham. It transformed him when he was young and he hopes it will have the same impact upon a group of delinquent youths who are drawn to crime. As he prepares them for a public boxing match, the boys find much-needed friendship and self-respect, realising that winning doesn’t only happen in the ring.
