Julia Ducournau’s provocative Palme d’or-winner is a twisted triumph. Agathe Rousselle (in an incredible feature debut) stars as Alexia, a woman who has a titanium plate fitted into her head after a car accident as a child, and consequently develops an unusual connection to motor vehicles. As an adult she makes her living dancing at car shows until a violent altercation with a fan sends her on a bizarre, unpredictable journey (for both Alexia and us). Titane, an exploration of avant-garde body-horror, is vibrant, extreme cinema, but it’s also delicately woven with surprisingly tender themes of gender and sexuality, and a deliciously wry humour. This follow-up to Raw firmly asserts Ducournau as a bold and original filmmaker worth taking a shocking, ultra-violent trip for.
