Wilder’s pitch-black film noir sees Joe Gillis, a broke screenwriter, ensnared by Norma Desmond, a delusional silent-film relic longing for the glory of a comeback. Living on Hollywood’s margins, Joe becomes a ghostwriter, kept man and witness to untrammelled obsession. Swanson and Holden are outstanding here, while von Stroheim and a succession of cameos by Hollywood legends from the silent and early sound era populate this dark portrait of Tinseltown.
