Kazan’s film of Tennessee Williams’ play about tensions arising in a marriage when the wife’s troubled sister comes to stay had Brando, Hunter and Malden reprising their stage roles and Leigh bringing a different kind of theatricality as the demure Blanche. Kazan rarely opens up the drama, creating instead a hothouse intensity of interior emotions. The uniformly excellent performances stick in the mind.
