Ealing Studios’ ambitious Technicolor rendering of the 1910-13 Terra Nova Expedition was pitched as a morale-boosting tale of bravery for the postwar doldrums. Stiff upper lips abound, yet the film packs a complex emotional punch and respects veracity: interviews with surviving team members and Captain Scott’s widow informed the screenplay, while cinematographer Jack Cardiff consulted Herbert Ponting’s original expedition footage. With a stirring Vaughan Williams score, this remastered classic is best experienced on the big screen.
