Recently released from prison, cowboy Matt returns to his gold rush town to look for his young son. He finds the boy being cared for by Kay, a kind saloon singer. Monroe excels in a role that pivoted away from the ‘dumb blonde’ stereotype she was confined to early in her career. She brings grit, resilience and maternal warmth to Kay, while her dedication saw her learn to play guitar and perform several of her own stunts.
Contains scenes of sexual threat and racist depictions of indigenous people.
The screening of River of No Return on Monday 22 June will include an introduction.
