Promoted as Hughes’ first adult comedy and boasting a number of expertly executed set-pieces – alongside two hugely charismatic lead performances – this Thanksgiving-set tale invokes a number of modes of transport as it charts the attempts by two very different men to make their way home. Mostly broad in its humour, the film nevertheless plays to the road movie’s time-honoured tradition of presenting disquieting observations on loneliness and alienation.
