Lewin’s typically sensitive version of Wilde’s fable about a young Victorian aristocrat who forfeits his soul to retain his youth offers an elegant, witty, insightful study of the process of corruption. Terrific performances from Hatfield, Lansbury and – perhaps most memorably – Sanders as the cynically hedonistic Lord Henry. The script, sets, cinematography and sense of period make for a vivid picture of Victorian society.
