Evoking the Western in the way it employs the iconography of the American landscape, Hitchcock’s final collaboration with Grant is a doozy. Unfolding as a series of rarely equalled set-pieces, everything here is on point: Bernard Herrmann’s thrilling score, Ernest Lehman’s superb script, Robert Burks’ rich and colourful cinematography, and both Grant’s unflappable charm and his perfectly fitted Savile Row suits. Hitchcock’s action masterpiece is full-throttle cinema.
