- Chasing the Real: Italian Neorealism
- The Mill on the Po
The Mill on the Po
Il mulino del Po
Alberto Lattuada achieves a starkly poetic grandness with this variation on the themes of neorealism, set during the historic revolts in the Po Valley.

This adaptation of Riccardo Bacchelli’s novel, co-written by Fellini, is a potent social portrait of peasant life set in the late 1800s, following the unification of Italy. A young couple, a miller and a farmer, find themselves in the middle of the farmers’ strikes against landowners, at the birth of the machine age. The theme of social change is woven into a narrative encompassing love and vengeance, all set against a vast cinematic backdrop.
Restored in 4K in 2021 by Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Cristaldi Film, with funding provided by Ministero della Cultura, at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, from the original nitrate negative, a first generation lavander and the original sound negative.
