Mean Girls: Claude Chabrol’s Dangerous Women
This discussion looks at the elements that draw us to the complex, morally ambiguous and compelling female characters that populate Claude Chabrol’s work.
- Total running time 90min
Few directors have understood women as complex, dangerous agents of their own destiny quite like Claude Chabrol. This panel brings together experts, including filmmaker Prano Bailey-Bond, film scholar Virginie Selavy and season curator Catherine Wheatley, to examine the extraordinary actresses at the heart of his work – from Stéphane Audran’s cool, enigmatic wives and Sandrine Bonnaire’s coiled, working-class fury to Isabelle Huppert’s inscrutable, unrepentant transgressors – and to ask what his unflinching, unsentimental gaze on women reveals about the society he spent a career dissecting.
