Starting out as a 1960s fiction about a murdered peasant leader but halted when a dictatorship took over the country, Coutinho’s film resumed decades later as a documentary, still featuring its original participants. Past and present intersect in this exploration of memory and political violence. Recently restored, this masterpiece redefines the notion of on-screen historical testimony.
