Bergman’s delightful film of Mozart’s opera – sung in Swedish – was shot in a (recreated) 18th-century theatre, allowing him to emphasise the piece’s artifice and stagecraft; we even get to go backstage occasionally, glimpsing the singers relaxing. The result, clearly a labour of love on the part of a director who’d loved and drawn on Mozart for years, is vivacious, funny and enthralling.
