Amélie lives by her own rules; initially unresponsive when other children are already talking and suddenly bright and chatty. She stands astride two cultures and bonds with her Belgian grandmother who wins her over with chocolate and her nanny who connects her with Japanese custom. The film’s darker themes dealing with death and the lasting impact of war are more suitable for older children, but it will resonate with all. This outstanding, colourful animated work set in late 1960s Japan presents an infant-eye view of the world.
