The Last Temptation of Christ

Scorsese’s respectful adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’s book sees Christ torn between divine destiny and an all-too-human awareness of pain and sexuality; the narrative departs from the gospels most dramatically in a clearly fantastic sequence envisaging what his life might have been like as a husband and father. An ambitious, intelligent work, notable for strong performances, fine camerawork and Peter Gabriel’s percussive score.
