A disaffected novelist and his wife drift through Milan for a day and night in Antonioni’s sublimely chilly masterpiece. Vitti plays a key foil to Mastroianni and Moreau’s characters, as a rich young woman who encounters the writer at a glamorous party. The three leads are placed in Antonioni’s gorgeously hollow compositions to subvert traditional narratives of marital betrayal.
