Devised as a self-funded tour around ailing cinemas on the border between East and West Germany, Wenders took to the road with a handful of actors, a small crew and a few pages of script. The result is an epic meditation on cinema, cultural displacement and history. A combination of road movie and Bildungsroman, Kings of the Road ended a trilogy that began with Alice in the Cities and Wrong Move, and remains one of the greatest examples of the genre.
