Del Toro reunites us with Ron Perlman’s demonic hero, his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz, aquatic empath Abe Sapien and slightly less hostile boss Tom Manning, as they face off against underworld prince Nuada. The film draws upon the director’s interest in symbolist painters, adding a pronounced visual lushness and sensuality. Extensively researched, character creator Mike Mignola and del Toro once again worked together on the design process, but this time the version feels much more the filmmaker’s own vision of this world.
