This sumptuous film explores, with empathy and complexity, the dynamics of a queer relationship on the cusp of the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, when the country’s LGBTQIA+ community faced an uncertain future. Wong Kar Wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle craft a feverish portrait of a doomed love affair that traverses Buenos Aires and rural Argentina, to become one of the defining road movies and romances of the 1990s.
The screening of Happy Together on Wednesday 8 July will be introduced by curator and writer Ying-Di Yin.
BFI Southbank will be closed Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 June due to a private event. BFI Riverfront will be closed on 9 July until 5pm. It will re-open in the evening.
