Undoubtedly one of the finest Biblical adaptations, Pasolini’s account of the life of Christ presents the Messiah as a decidedly political creature, fuelled by anger at social injustice. The use of non-professional actors and stark southern Italian landscapes makes for great credibility and timeless relevance, the latter quality enhanced further by an eclectic soundtrack that takes in Bach, the blues and much else.
